The University of Nairobi and German universities have enjoyed long-term cooperation through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) on matters of research and learning. The DAAD Regional Office in East Africa is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary on the 19th and 20th of September 2023 at the University of Nairobi.

This was revealed during a courtesy call to the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof Julius Ogeng’o by the German Ambassador to Kenya, Amb. Sebastian Groth on Tuesday, August 15, 2023. The celebrations will also coincide with the Kenya-Germany 60th bilateral relations celebrations where H.E. the President, Dr. William Ruto has been invited as a DAAD alumni.

During his remarks, Amb. Sebastian Groth lauded the steady relationship the University has had with German universities. “I realize the university has signed collaboration agreements with a number of universities in Germany, and I would like to appreciate that,” he said. “I highly commend the ongoing 5 long-term cooperation of the University of Nairobi with German universities,” he added. The Ambassador looked forward to working with the Ag. Vice Chancellor.

In his remarks, Prof Julius Ogeng’o said that for the university to realize its vision of becoming a world-class institution, there have to be more partnerships and collaborations with foreign peer universities. “We will see more partnerships and collaborations in future as the university strives to be a world-class institution,” he said. “There are 70 scholars currently in Germany through DAAD, so we have very good relations with Germany,” he added.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is a German initiative that offers scholarships and funding for undergraduate and postgraduate students to study and do research in Germany. The DAAD Regional Office in East Africa is headquartered in Nairobi. There is a national collaboration agreement signed between the German Chancellor and the President of Kenya, that will see German being taught in tertiary institutions to facilitate Kenyan skilled labour with ease of employment in Germany.
