The University of Nairobi, Yamaguchi University and Kyoto University are set to collaborate in research areas that will be of mutual benefit. This was revealed during a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor by a delegation from Yamaguchi University and Kyoto University on Monday, September 25, 2023.

The visiting delegation was led by Prof Motoki Takahashi, from the Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies, Kyoto University and Prof Hayasaka Daisuke from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Yamaguchi University both in Japan. Also present were Deans and Chairmen from different faculties of the University of Nairobi.

In his remarks, Prof Motoki Takahashi noted that the University of Nairobi is regarded highly in Sub-Saharan Africa, and was looking forward to resume mutual relationships. He also pointed out the need to collaborate in the area of postgraduate studies and research. “The University is highly regarded in Sub-Saharan Africa and we would like to resume relationships in the postgraduate field,” he said.

The areas of interest of the two Japanese universities were in the field of Veterinary Medicine and Health Sciences. It was highlighted that Deans from other faculties are also interested in collaborating with the University of Nairobi. Already 4 students, including 2 PhDs, have been sent to Japan, and are planning to send more PhD students in the upcoming year.

On his part, Prof Hayasaka Daisuke highlighted that a collaboration agreement between Yamaguchi University and the University of Nairobi has already been drafted. “I'd like to point out that a collaboration agreement between the two universities has been written and is awaiting approvals from the necessary authorities. It will then be sent to the Vice Chancellor for signing.” he pointed out. He added that the agreement will be tailor-made to include other faculties from Yamaguchi.

The Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama in response, welcomed this initiative and called for the expansion of collaborations with other universities in Japan. "The University of Nairobi welcomes this great undertaking, that is where we are going. The creation of a global student, one who sees themselves in a global context,” he said.

The second-oldest institution in Japan, Kyoto University is also one of Japan's National Seven Universities and one of the top universities in Asia. Kyoto University is renowned for producing top scholars, including 8 Nobel Prize winners, making it one of Asia's top research-focused institutions. Yamaguchi University is the third-oldest national comprehensive university in Japan and one of the best public universities in Yamaguchi City.
