On December 8th, 2023, The University of Nairobi hosted the International Migrants Day in collaboration with International Organization for Migration (IOM). The event saw representatives from eight universities gather and engage in a debate knockout competition. Technical University of Kenya emerged winners and the three students won internship opportunites at the International Organization for Migration (IOM).  The event, held under the theme "Think of Tomorrow, Act Today: Unlocking the Power of Migration as One of the Solutions to Global Challenges," highlighted the essential role migrants play in shaping our world.

Participating universities included the host, University of Nairobi, alongside Strathmore University, Kenyatta University, United States International University - Africa, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Technical University of Kenya, and Daystar University. Each institution demonstrated its commitment to supporting migrant populations and fostering a more inclusive and equitable world. 

The day unfolded with powerful messages from key stakeholders. Ms. Roseline K. Njogu, Principal Secretary State Department for Diaspora Affairs, Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs acknowledged the significance of celebrating the International Migrants Day at The University of Nairobi, "It is important that we involve young people and the academia in conversations around migration so that we bring together the ivory tower and the street for a useful co learning experience." 

Ms. Dimanche Sharon, Chief of Mission for the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), emphasized the need to recognize and celebrate the contributions of migrants in a globalized world. "We are living in a global village," she said, "we need the ideas of everyone." 

Migration as a catalyst to cultural enrichment and innovation was underscored by Dr. Dan Opon the Director State Department of Immigration and Citizen Services. He stated, "We should look at migration from a positive lens. It leads to promotion of human rights and economic development." 

Prof. Julius Ogengo, Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs at the University of Nairobi, highlighted the university's pivotal role in supporting migrants and international students. "The University of Nairobi plays a vital role in offering education for migrants and international students," he stated, emphasizing their commitment to contributing knowledge through research on migration and development. 

The role of migrants as drivers of development was also emphasized. Dr. Stephen Jackson, United Nations Resident Coordinator (UNRC), drew attention to the multifaceted nature of migration. "Migrants are not just individuals in transit," he declared, "they are vibrant agents of change. They are a living embodiment of the multicultural and globalized world. Migrants are drivers of development." 

On connecting the diaspora, Augustus Mogoi, Head of Safety and Security at Skyward Express, highlighted the importance of fostering global connectivity. He remarked, "Our commitment stands unwavering to nurture the connections that promote global connectivity - connecting the diaspora and their families globally. Migration is a testament to the shared human experience." 

Solange Karwera, Head of Vendor Management at Safaricom, emphasized the potential of migration within the private sector. She commented, "I believe that the private sector can harness the power of migration. We are starting to see, thanks to technology, that we can export expertise." 

The event also acknowledged the challenges faced by migrants. Allan Kilavuka, CEO of Kenya Airways, highlighted the importance of safe migration pathways. He stated, "Today is a day to discuss the key challenges facing immigrants. Due to lack of safe pathways for immigration, immigrants use dangerous routes. Kenya Airways has a zero tolerance to human trafficking & smuggling. Let's think tomorrow & act today." 

The overall winners of the debate was The Technical University of Kenya with Catholic University of Eastern Africa and Strathmore University coming in close second and third place respectively. The debate concluded with a call to action, urging everyone to "Think of Tomorrow, Act Today" and work towards unlocking the power of migration to address global challenges and create a better future for all.
