The Institute for Climate Change and Adaptation (ICCA) and the University Advancement & Institutional Development have opened the first edition of the African Summer School on Climate Change and Adaptation for undergraduate/Bachelor’s students in Science, Technology, and Engineering, who have completed a minimum of two (2) years. The School will run from July 1-12, 2024 at the Chiromo Campus, University of Nairobi (Kenya).

The proposed Summer School will offer introductory courses in Nature-based Solutions and Climate Adaptation Pathways in Africa. It will also include project teamwork, several high-level conferences, and field visits. East Africa History and a Kiswahili course will introduce the foreign students to the regional culture. The program targets students from Kenyan, African, and the rest of the world institutions, with a focus on Europe (France, Spain…), North America (Canada…) and Asia (China…).

The chairman of the Institution of Climate Change, Prof. Daniel Olago, encouraged students to apply for the program, especially from Europe and Asia. “The aim of the school is to raise awareness of young students from around the world of the Sustainable Development Goal No. 13 on Climate Action in the African context (especially Kenya/East Africa), to demonstrate the potential and capacities of African universities to address the challenges and to drive impactful and international research, and to raise the visibility and attractiveness of UoN in the international landscape and for potential future studies.”

On his part, Prof. Marc Zolver also emphasized the importance of the summer school. “Climate Change represents a huge challenge for Africa as the most impacted continent, although the least CO2 emitting. The young generation has an important role to play in the future to tackle these challenges and it is our responsibility to build their capacities. The school is ambitious to demonstrate the African expertise and encourage better North-South understanding and mutual esteem by mixing students from different continents.”

The ICCA provides a chance to train a high caliber of students and professionals in the discipline of Climate Change and Adaptation. It also aims to engage well-rounded scholars with competencies in teaching, consultancy, community service, and research.

At the end of the summer school, the students will be awarded a certificate from UoN with their transcript/equivalence in credits (total equivalent to 2 ECTS in the European system).

The deadline for application is May 19, 2024, at 24:00h
