The University of Nairobi (UoN) has formally entered into a collective agreement with Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) to provide mentorship in the development of MMUST's School of Medicine. This collaboration was solidified through a ceremonial signing event held on Monday, March 11, 2024, at the University of Nairobi Towers.

The two institutions have had existing working relations through faculty exchanges for teaching and examination purposes, as well as the utilization of adjunct lecturers. Through this strategic partnership, the University of Nairobi pledges to extend support to MMUST's School of Medicine by offering guidance in faculty training and facilitating the development of postgraduate programs.

In his remarks, Professor Shibairo emphasized the nascent stage of MMUST's School of Medicine, noting the imminent graduation of its inaugural cohort this year. Expressing a commitment to growth, Professor Shibairo acknowledged the necessity of aligning with experienced institutions to advance MMUST's aspirations. Furthermore, he underscored MMUST's ambition to emerge as a hub of excellence in mental health, highlighting the imperative for a proficient and well-trained workforce “The university has to learn from the people who have been in this business for a while, that is why we chose to partner with the best,” he said. “Also, MMUST wants to establish itself as a center of excellence in mental health, thus the need to have qualified trained personnel,” added Prof Shibairo.

Professor Kiama commended MMUST's choice in selecting the University of Nairobi in its developmental trajectory. He applauded the collaboration as a testament to the synergistic potential inherent in regional partnerships, advocating for mutual support among neighboring institutions. Beyond academic excellence Professor Kiama underscored the key role played by UoN's Faculty of Health Sciences in supporting Kenya's healthcare sector, through contribution of a substantial portion to Kenya’s health professionals.

The signing ceremony cements the negotiation process initiated in 2021.
