The University of Nairobi (UoN), through the Center for Sustainable Dryland Ecosystems and Societies (CSDES) in collaboration with Kenyatta University (KU) and other partners held a successful event on 10th February 2012 at the Kenya Institute of Education that was aimed at introducing accomplishments and Visions of Africa-US higher education partnerships in the two Universities.

The Centre for Sustainable Dryland Ecosystems and Societies (CSDES) organized for a training seminar in Agent Based Modeling (ABM)from 12th March – 23rd Marchas part of the realization of its capacity building objective. The event attracted participants from 7 institutions ranging from students to staff members of governmental and non-governmental institutions. Students came from Nairobi University School of Biological Studies (Chiromo Campus) and College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (Upper Kabete Campus) and from Kenyatta University department of Environmental Sciences. They were drawn both from undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Non-students came from institutions such as Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI), Regional Centre for Mapping of Resource for Development (RCMRD), and National Museums of Kenya. University Staffs were not left out as students, even among the learned for we had Prof. Genevieve Wanjala who is the dean of the School of Education, University of Nairobi, and Dr.  Richard Onwonga of the same university.  

Prof. Randall  Boone of Colorado State University (CSU) and International Livestock  Research Institute (ILRI) was the  instructor of the training. He used the NetLogo platform for the modeling seminar.  NetLogo is a programmable environment for simulating natural and social phenomena and is suitable for complex systems.

The Centre for Sustainable Dryland Ecosystems and Societies (CSDES) was officially inaugurated into the Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT) on the 21st February 2012. This was during LARMAT’s Departmental Strategic Planning Workshop held at Morendat Training & Conference Center in Naivasha. The inauguration of the Centre in the Department was among the objectives of the workshop that was intended to align the Center’s mandate to that of LARMAT for synergy and complementarity.

CSDES FORGES TIES WITH A COMMUNITY BASED RESOURCE CENTRE

In an effort to fulfill its fourth objective (community outreach and engagement), the Centre for Sustainable Dryland Ecosystems and Societies’ (CSDES) Coordinator, Prof. J.T Njoka together with his communication team recently embarked on a community outreach program in Loita Division, Narok County where CSDES and Loita Cultural and Resource Centre agreed to work together to develop management approaches for dryland systems.

Present at the meeting where the partnership was made were Mr. Josiah Odongo, Loita Division Officer, Mr. Charles Ole Saitabau, Chairman of Loita Cultural and Resource Centre, Dr. Cecila Onyango, CSDES Management Committee member, CSDES Communication team and Community members.

IS REDD+ A GOOD POLICY OPTION FOR KENYA?

The Centre for Sustainable Dryland Ecosystems and Societies (CSDES) held a very successful seminar on 13th July 2012 aimed at discussing the viability of adopting REDD+ as a conservation measure in the country. REDD+ stands for Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in developing countries. The Seminar was held in the Seminar room at the Department of Clinical Studies, College of Agriculture, University of Nairobi.

CSDES EXPLORES PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES WITH PRACTICAL ACTION

In a bid to enhance more collaborations and partnerships with institutions engaged in education, research and action supporting dryland communities, the Centre for Sustainable Dryland Ecosystems and Societies (CSDES) has initiated talks with Practical Action.

Speaking in a meeting held on 10th August 2012 at the CSDES’ office, Grace Mukasa, Practical Action Regional Director, who was accompanied by Mr. Willy Tuimising, team lead on food and agriculture, said that Practical Action is looking forward to a strategic partnership with CSDES. The aim of the partnership is to come up with practical solutions for problems facing communities today. Some of the areas she identified for possible partnerships included; joint research and documentation of best practices, engagement of policy makers, joint fundraising, curriculum development and sharing of contacts.
