The ultimate goal of the project is to strengthen and recapture the relationship between youth and their land amongst pastoralists in northern Kenya. This will be achieved by fostering inter‐generational dialog amongst community members. The collaborative team from University of Nairobi, Colorado State University and Denver Zoological Foundation is to undertake a community‐based conservation project in which it will 1) collaborate with community members to define the scope, methods and deliverables; 2) implement the methods/approach as a trial run to determine viability and effectiveness and; 3) conduct a preliminary assessment of the data collected during the pilot test. This proof‐of‐concept approach will eventually lead to a full proposal to the Christensen Fund or Segal Family Foundation.

The primary stakeholders in this project are pastoralists in regions including Kalama, Lorata, Laikipia, and others. These are the regions in which a substantial transition is occurring that creates questions about the future of local knowledge about grassland ecosystems.
