 International Canopy of Conservation (I-CAN) PROJECT 2015 SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT.

The International Canopy of Conservation is a partnership between ACC and McGill University. It integrates long-term research pursued by McGill researchers in East Africa, working closely over decades with individual and institutional collaborators in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.  The major goal of the project is to assess the effectiveness of environmentally specific models for and experiments in community conservation in reconciling the imperatives of sustaining biodiversity with the amelioration of the life conditions of neighboring human communities.

Under the Capacity building initiative, the I-CAN project is offering


  1. 6 MSc. Scholarships These will be tenable at the University of Nairobi, Under the Center for Sustainable Dryland Ecosystems and Societies (CSDES). The studies are expected to be on issues around rangeland management and the sustainability of Kenya rangelands. These may be approached from either the livestock management or wildlife conservation perspective. Priority will be given to proposed studies based in either Laikipia or Kajiado counties. Applications are welcomed from registered MSc students and those who have already finished their coursework.

  1. Ph. D Scholarships (2) - These scholarships will be tenable at McGill University in Montreal, Canada in 2016. The ideal candidate(s) will be MSc/ MA graduates who meet the following criteria;
  1. Citizens of Kenya or Tanzania
  2. Studied the following issues in dryland areas; Sustainable livelihoods, ecosystem conservation, range management, land tenure/ policy issues, Livestock production systems, and related subjects or:
  3. Have at least 3 years’ postgraduate professional experience in the above fields in Kajiado, Laikipia, or Northern Tanzania
  4. Aged 40 years or below, as at December 2015
