In order to realize it vision, ADIS will be guided by the following strategic themes:

  1. Teaching and learning through coordination of multidisciplinary teaching and training, development and delivery of curriculum for dryland sustainability for degree programs,  short courses for retooling practitioners, support of experiential training and mentorship as well as exchange programs (local and international) for students and faculty members.
  2. Research, knowledge management and communication to influence policy and investment in natural resource management, dryland livestock and crop agriculture, food and nutritional security and safety, market access and trade, livelihoods, peace building and conflicts management and socio-cultural changes as well as gender and youth empowerment.
  3. Community engagement/outreach: ADIS envisions participation of communities in research agenda and needs assessments, technology transfer, dissemination of research findings, as well as engage in governance and policy dialogue with local, county, national and regional institutions.
  4. Resource mobilization: to leverage additional resources (singly, jointly) through proposal development, empowerment of communities for fundraising and consultancy services as well as through commissioned research projects.
  5. Partnerships and networking:  Build linkages with internal and external higher education groups, government (national and county), private sector, development partners and communities. This is expected to enhance complementarity and learning.
