UoN is the Center of excellence in dryland resource management after being accredited by the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) member Universities to spearhead human capacity development at PhD level for Kenya and Eastern and Southern Africa since 2008.

It is from this perspective that CSDES which is located at the Department of Land Resources Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT), CAVS submitted a proposal to Kenya Sustainable Land Management Program for additional resources to support the review of the PhD curriculum and organise it for open and distance learning for wide accessibility by clients from remote areas and also RUFORUM member Universities. The grant was awarded in July 214 and will be implemented upto 30th June 2015.

The overall objective of this project will be to contribute towards improved higher education for development of human capital with skills and abilities to manage natural resources resulting in sustainable dryland ecosystems and improved peoples livelihoods and economic well-being.

Specific Objectives
