On Friday, 17 July 2026, the University of Nairobi will mark a defining moment in its history as Professor Eng. Ayub Njoroge Gitau is formally installed as the Ninth Vice-Chancellor of Kenya's premier institution of higher learning.

The installation ceremony, to be held at the University's iconic Taifa Hall, will bring together members of the University community, government leaders, diplomats, alumni, development partners, captains of industry, and friends of the University to witness the formal investiture of the institution's chief academic and administrative officer. Steeped in academic tradition and symbolism, the ceremony represents far more than the formal assumption of office. It is a celebration of leadership, institutional continuity, and the enduring values that have guided the University of Nairobi for more than five decades.

Across the world, the installation of a Vice-Chancellor is among the most significant ceremonies in university life. It is a public affirmation of trust, responsibility, and stewardship, marking the moment when a new leader is formally entrusted with guiding the institution into its next chapter.

At the University of Nairobi, this tradition reflects the values upon which the institution was founded scholarship, integrity, service, and excellence. During the ceremony, the incoming Vice-Chancellor is formally vested with the instruments of office that symbolize the authority and responsibilities entrusted to the office. Among these are the Constitution of Kenya, the Universities Act, the University Charter, the University Statutes, the University Seal, and the University Mace, the enduring emblem of the University's authority and academic sovereignty.

The academic procession, ceremonial regalia, and formal installation underscore the dignity of the office while reinforcing the University's commitment to preserving traditions that connect generations of scholars and leaders.

Since attaining university status in 1970, the University of Nairobi has been guided by visionary Vice-Chancellors whose leadership has transformed the institution into one of Africa's leading universities.

Each has contributed uniquely to strengthening academic programmes, expanding research, enhancing infrastructure, deepening international collaborations, and positioning the University as a centre of excellence in higher education. Together, they have built a legacy founded on resilience, innovation, and service to the nation and beyond.

As the 9th Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eng. Ayub Njoroge Gitau joins this distinguished lineage of academic leaders. His installation marks not only the beginning of a new administration but also the continuation of a proud tradition of visionary leadership that has shaped generations of students, scholars, innovators, and professionals.

Professor Gitau assumes office at a pivotal moment for higher education. Universities are increasingly called upon to respond to rapidly changing societal needs through cutting-edge research, technological innovation, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and impactful partnerships.

As the University prepares to install its Ninth Vice-Chancellor, it celebrates not only a change in leadership but also the enduring strength of an institution that continues to inspire generations through knowledge, innovation, and excellence.
